In order to successfully protect IP rights regarding geographical indications for the territory of Bulgaria, the first step to be taken is to proceed with the filing of an application before the Bulgarian Patent and Trade Mark Office.

The required documents and information for filing an application are a signed power of attorney; the name and the address of the applicant; a designation of the good; the appellation of origin or the indication of a source; a description of the geographical locality borders; description of the established properties or peculiarities of the goods and their relationship with the geographical environment or geographical origin; and a document certifying registration of the geographical indication in the country of origin.
