2,5 Million Counterfeit Goods Have Been Seized by the Customs Authorities in Bulgaria for 2010

654 applications for action have been filed before the Bulgarian Customs Agency in 2010. 516 of them have been received by the Customs Administrations from other Member States of the European Union. Comparing to 2009, the number of the applications has increased by 30% .

The quantity of the seized goods suspected of infringing intellectual property rights was 2 544 533 including 10 685 kg. counterfeit packs for cigarettes, bearing well-known trademarks. The number of cases in which the Bulgarian Customs Administration intervened in 2010 was 1784.

The most popular items detained by the customs officers were clothes and apparels followed by mobile phone accessories, toys, labels, packs and car spare parts, as well as bags, belts, scarves, key holders, purses and suitcases.

Overall, China was the main country of origin for infringing IP rights articles, followed by Turkey, Hong Kong and the United Arab Emirates.

The most common counterfeited brands detained in 2010 were Nokia, Adidas, Nike, Armani, Disney, Hello Kitty и Bakugan.  

According to the Bulgarian Customs Agency the most significant seizures of counterfeit goods were:

  • 74 805 mobile phone accessories bearing the trademarks Motorola, Sony, Sony-Ericson, Samsung and Nоkia;
  • 42 336 empty bottles of vodka bearing the mark Rusky Standart;
  • 12 216 toys Bakugan;
  • 3200 kg. packs of cigarettes bearing the mark CAMEL; and
  • 100 satellite receivers bearing the mark Dreambox.
